October 26, 2010 — United States Air Force Thunderbird jets flew over the Magic Kingdom in honor of US Air Force Week. Thousands of guests watched as the jets flew in formation over the Walt Disney World Resort. The fly-over helped kick off Air Force Week activities, which begin October 26, at Cocoa Beach. This year’s Air Force Week theme is “Honoring Hometown Heroes” and highlights Airmen and their families. United States Air Force dignitaries were honored during the Celebrate a Dream Come True parade at the Magic Kingdom. About 20 Airmen and their families were invited by their leadership to participate in the day’s ceremony and celebration at the theme park. Each Air Force Week includes community visits and talks by Air Force officials, flight demonstration team performances, and displays providing a detailed look at the women and men of the United States Air Force serving on the front lines. The sites selected for Air Force Weeks 2010 provide opportunities to express gratitude to the communities which support the Air Force. Locations of previous Air Force Weeks include New York, Los Angeles, St. Louis, Salt Lake City, Omaha, Hampton Roads, Sacramento, and Philadelphia.
Born in Alameda, California, on August 8th, 1903, Paul Mantz first learned to fly when he was 17. After spending several years barnstorming, and washing out of Army Flight School in 1927 for buzzing a railroad car filled with officers, Mantz returned to California and started his own charter air service. He eventually moved into movie stunt flying. He really became noticed by Hollywood were he flew as a stunt pilot for the Howard Hughes war epic, “Hell’s Angels”. Although Mantz performed many aerial stunts, he specialized in flying through buildings. In the 1932 movie “Air Mail”, he guided a Stearman plane through a 45-foot-wide aircraft. He developed a number of camera and aeronautical innovations to improve aerial photography, and continued as a stunt flyer (he once flew under the Golden Gate Bridge for the movie “This is Cinerama”), a director of aerial photography, and a supplier of aircraft and pilots for the movies for two decades after the war. He formed a company, with legendary pilot Frank Tallman, named Tallmantz Aviation in 1961 based at Orange County Airport (now John Wayne Airport) in Southern California. Together, they provided pilots, camera planes, and a small fleet of antique and historic aircraft for movie and television productions. Mantz loved restoring and rebuilding rare aircraft, such as a copy of Lindbergh’s “Spirit of Saint Louis”. However, Mantz and Tallman’s collaboration did not last long. Air Canada is Canadas largest national airline and is based out of Montreal. It is primarily a cargo airline ferrying cargo to one hundred and fifty destinations but it also flies passengers to ninety locations also. It’s primary base is at Montreal’s international airport but it also has hubs in Vancouver and Toronto. Air Canada Jetz is it’s premium jet charter service.
Checking in an hour before take off is now compulsory for all internal flights within Canada. If you are travelling on an international flight try to check in two hours in advance and if your heading to the US, allow an hour and a half for check in. Your baggage entitlements with Air Canada is twenty two pounds which is standard for most airlines. Items such as laptops and carryon cases will need to be checked prior to boarding although you have to stick to the allowed dimensions. Depending on the class your flying, your baggage entitlements increase. Economy is allowed to carry up to a maximum of fifty lbs. First class allows you up to seventy lbs. Any excess baggage over your entitlements will incur a charge.
When booking online or when you checkin you will be assigned your seat, it has become pretty much standard practice during the reservations stage. Legroom on flights varies whether it is domestic or international, for international flights it is thirty four inches but it is thirty inches for domestic.
Children younger than two years of age are free to travel on all local flights on condition they travel on the lap of an adult. For international flights, children can also travel on the lap of an adult but they have to pay ten per cent of a standard fare. There are no discount fares for senior citizens but their travelling companions can avail of cheaper fares.
